The islands of Maldives appear in-between the trading route of the Indian Ocean. Thus settlers, and visitors from neighboring regions and around the world have come in contact with the islands .The looks of the Maldivian people also differs from one atoll to the other, attributing to the genes passed on by South and Southeast Asians, Africans, and Arabians.The culture of Maldives is very much influenced by India,Shri-lanka and Southi Arabia.Thus mixing of cultures is very much seen in Maldivian but Islam is the only national religion in Maldives.

In Ancient days,people of Maldives followed Buddhism but they started following Islam from 1153.The main events ,festivals of Maldivian life follow the Muslim Calendar. Muslims may only become citizens in Maldives, and daily life is regulated according to the tenets of Islam. Maldivian beliefs have been very much based around religion and superstition, often used together in matters of significance but given separate positions in society. According to the Islamic religion, the people of Maldives believe that people go to heaven or hell after death, depending on their faithful deeds to the five tenets of Islam in their life span.They do fast during the month of Ramadan and pray five times in a day,give alms to poor and needy people.Possibly,in the month of Ramadan they make a pilgrimage to the holy city of Macca.Believers are considered worthy to enter heaven if they were faithful to repeat the creed "There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is the prophet of Allah".


The political, judicial, and religious systems in Maldives are so closely intertwined that the political leaders and judges are also the country's religious leaders. The president is considered the primary religious leader, and judges, known as gazis, are responsible for interpreting Islamic law in the courts.
